Not my forte really but Conan just reminded me that I do love the odd one here and there and given that PS I Love you is billed as romantic when clearly it sets off my twee twitchy alarm I want to put forth my idea of Romance, feel free to add yours, I'll make up a top ten for the most mentioned. Then I'll watch them with Puddy next time it's wet and I"m avoiding work or better yet, when I'm slightly ill. ( but not too sick)
My favourite romantic films are.
1- Moonstruck. Love it, love her love him, love Olimpia, love 'he took my arm'.
2-Truly Madly Deeply- Oh when she cried I cried. Also it had the Rickman factor...mmmmmmrickman.
3-Terms Of Endearment- I've said it before and I'll say it again, when Shirley breaks and comes screaming furious and hopeless out of the hospital waiting room I almost sent myself into a coma from crying.
4-Ghost- cheesy, but still, it's in there. Cried.
5- Crocodile Dundee- I'm kidding, I kid I kid. 'Or am I?' ( Spongebob voice) I'm putting in 'As good as it Gets' at 5, and yes, I do know most of the script off by heart, I can do this Melvin, I truly can.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure you'd also enjoy Truly, Madly, Sheeply... the poignant tale of a man whose lover is dying of scrapie.
It almost fits into today's probablility factor.
ReplyDeleteOh, FMC, I cry every time I watch "Terms." Lurve it. Flao is soooo easy to hate. Also, I love "Angel Baby" with hottie John Lynch. When she goes on about how they stole her blood. Tragic! Also love "He Said, She Said" when she throws the mug at his head.

The Remains of the Day - for all that unexpressed, understated lurve. As good as it gets - well, how could anyone leave it out? The English Patient - perennially moving stuff. And the best ever - Love Story with Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neill has me in buckets every time. And definitely Ghost, on a big screen with that music.

ReplyDeleteI only saw parts of remains of the day recently and I was intrigued, I must watch all of it. When Sir Anthony's not hamming it up he really is a wonderful actor.

Conan I"ve never heard of that film either, I shall look that up too, is it really that weepy? And eight hanky job? Good lord.

Other than that, I don't really dig romantic movies. Ghost was awful, and Love Story was comical. "Love means never having to say you're sorry..." What the hell does that even MEAN?
Though Practical Magic was fun. And that Aidan Quinn...oh, the answer is yessssss.

ReplyDeleteThe Painted Veil - - it is a must see. Truly. It is not your classical romance but it will have you blubbering, I gurantee it.
Proof of Life - - Not only have you got Russel Crowe but it is also not classically romantic. It is action packed but the romance in it is just drooly. Crowe. Mmph.
Pride & Prejudice - - Yes, even with Knightley in it.
Mr Darcy makes my knees go weak. Romance abounds!
I cant think of other ones now ... guh.
Ooh - I was thinking Moonstruck at the start of that post, before I saw it at number one!!
ReplyDeleteIt is my absolute favourite romantic film (and I don't like girlie films at all usually) - the bit when he says that she has ruined his life, and she slaps him and says "get over it", I love it! And the mother is fantastic - and the grandfather and all the dogs, brilliant. I may even watch it now, with a glass of red - perfect for a cold Thursday night!! No-one ever seems to understand why I love it so - well impressed that you picked it!
I saw the painted veil a while a go. Iiked it a lot, but curiously I didn't find it all the romantic, moving yes, romantic no.
ReplyDeleteSheesh! It is indeed most excellent for a cold Thurdsay evening, I loved the mother in it, I loved when she was woken up 'Who's dead?' s the first ting out of her mouth. And Nicolas was just too too perfect for that role and she was fabulous and...I'll stop now.
I forgot that bit about the mother! I loved that! The breakfast scene at the end is brilliant too. And Nicholas normally does nothing for me, but he was just great in that film. I'm off to watch it this very instant - I was in really mopey form when I got home, but happy as a clam now: Moonstruck, a glass or two, and some cheese, yippie!

I'm with Sam - Cyrano de Bergerac makes me bawl - the bit at the end where she recognises his voice and realises it was him... my eyes are welling up just thinking of it... and Casablanca, who could leave out Casablanca?
