Romantic Films.

Yummy.

Not my forte really but Conan just reminded me that I do love the odd one here and there and given that PS I Love you is billed as romantic when clearly it sets off my twee twitchy alarm I want to put forth my idea of Romance, feel free to add yours, I'll make up a top ten for the most mentioned. Then I'll watch them with Puddy next time it's wet and I"m avoiding work or better yet, when I'm slightly ill. ( but not too sick)
My favourite romantic films are.

1- Moonstruck. Love it, love her love him, love Olimpia, love 'he took my arm'.
2-Truly Madly Deeply- Oh when she cried I cried. Also it had the Rickman factor...mmmmmmrickman.
3-Terms Of Endearment- I've said it before and I'll say it again, when Shirley breaks and comes screaming furious and hopeless out of the hospital waiting room I almost sent myself into a coma from crying.
4-Ghost- cheesy, but still, it's in there. Cried.
5- Crocodile Dundee- I'm kidding, I kid I kid. 'Or am I?' ( Spongebob voice) I'm putting in 'As good as it Gets' at 5, and yes, I do know most of the script off by heart, I can do this Melvin, I truly can.

I guessed you'd be a fan of that one, Missus.

I'm sure you'd also enjoy Truly, Madly, Sheeply... the poignant tale of a man whose lover is dying of scrapie.

  4. It almost fits into today's probablility factor.

  5. Oh, FMC, I cry every time I watch "Terms." Lurve it. Flao is soooo easy to hate. Also, I love "Angel Baby" with hottie John Lynch. When she goes on about how they stole her blood. Tragic! Also love "He Said, She Said" when she throws the mug at his head.

Gimme, I'm more with the first one when Melvin learned how to be a good monster. Tromaville is shlocky good fun.

  6. Ooops!
    I meant "Flap"

The Remains of the Day - for all that unexpressed, understated lurve. As good as it gets - well, how could anyone leave it out? The English Patient - perennially moving stuff. And the best ever - Love Story with Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neill has me in buckets every time. And definitely Ghost, on a big screen with that music.

Oh all right... Lovers of the Arctic Circle. There, I said it. Be warned, it's an eight hankie job.

  9. I see that they embark on an 'erotic odyssey'.

What are the hankies for Conan?

Now Gimme, you know I'd put my cynicism aside and exposed my vulnerable side for a second and there you go taking liberties!! So here's a challenge for you: rent it (in Laser if nowhere else), view it tonight, blog it tomorrow...

  11. I only saw parts of remains of the day recently and I was intrigued, I must watch all of it. When Sir Anthony's not hamming it up he really is a wonderful actor.
Medbh, he was throttle worthy wasn't he? I loved Shirley in that film though, so brittle and so strong at the same time.
Conan I"ve never heard of that film either, I shall look that up too, is it really that weepy? And eight hanky job? Good lord.

(Are you the same FMC, voice of reason, who posts comments at ATW occasionally?)

Yup, Terms of Endearment scene is a killer.

  13. Oh, that Truly Madly Deeply had me blubbering like an infant for a good hour after it was over. The Rickman factor, yes indeedie! When he's watching her through the window at the end, going on a date?

    Buhuhuhuhuhuhuhu...

Other than that, I don't really dig romantic movies. Ghost was awful, and Love Story was comical. "Love means never having to say you're sorry..." What the hell does that even MEAN?

Though Practical Magic was fun. And that Aidan Quinn...oh, the answer is yessssss.

  14. Alison, I am indeed.
    Right, Terms is romping it.
Andraste he is a fine drink of water that man, I saw him in dublin a few years back, he is VELLY handsome in real life too.

  15. I know she's annoying, but I also love "The Way We Were."
    Also, "Now Voyager."
    Bette Davis was soooooo cool.

  16. You know, even though its got some murky crap in their, with the 'powder rooms' I do love Breakfast at Tiffianys. When she goes looking or Cat in the rain my lower lip wobbles.
I thought Babs was pretty good in Prince of Tides-although her nails scare me.
I do like crying I must say, I cried during The Lion King for god's sake.

I'm gonna go with a few recent flicks here.

The Painted Veil - - it is a must see. Truly. It is not your classical romance but it will have you blubbering, I gurantee it.

Proof of Life - - Not only have you got Russel Crowe but it is also not classically romantic. It is action packed but the romance in it is just drooly. Crowe. Mmph.

Pride & Prejudice - - Yes, even with Knightley in it.
Mr Darcy makes my knees go weak. Romance abounds!

I cant think of other ones now ... guh.

Ooh - I was thinking Moonstruck at the start of that post, before I saw it at number one!!

It is my absolute favourite romantic film (and I don't like girlie films at all usually) - the bit when he says that she has ruined his life, and she slaps him and says "get over it", I love it! And the mother is fantastic - and the grandfather and all the dogs, brilliant. I may even watch it now, with a glass of red - perfect for a cold Thursday night!! No-one ever seems to understand why I love it so - well impressed that you picked it!

  19. I saw the painted veil a while a go. Iiked it a lot, but curiously I didn't find it all the romantic, moving yes, romantic no.
Sheesh! It is indeed most excellent for a cold Thurdsay evening, I loved the mother in it, I loved when she was woken up 'Who's dead?' s the first ting out of her mouth. And Nicolas was just too too perfect for that role and she was fabulous and...I'll stop now.

I forgot that bit about the mother! I loved that! The breakfast scene at the end is brilliant too. And Nicholas normally does nothing for me, but he was just great in that film. I'm off to watch it this very instant - I was in really mopey form when I got home, but happy as a clam now: Moonstruck, a glass or two, and some cheese, yippie!

  22. I'm watching Hannibal Rising on the 'putor right now, it is truly awful. I really mean truly truly awful.

  23. Cyrano de Bergerac with Gerard Depardieu. Tears, snot, the works. And the English Patient, I agree with Shebah. And Truly, Madly, Deeply. Always always Truly, Madly, Deeply. Oh, Alan!!!

To Have and Have Not - many won't have seen/heard of it but I suggest you remedy that soon!
Bogart's first movie with Lauren Bacall - you are actually watching them fall in love as the movie progresses - no acting can ever match that.

(OK, gotta go do some guy stuff now - where did I leave that beer/spitoon/erm..gun)

Gaspard Ulliel (sp?) makes my skin crawl in all the right places...

I watched Hannibal Rising the other night whilst ironing. Excellent movie - truly disturbing. And crawly...

  26. He's a creepy little sod to be sure.
Mac! I shalls check To have and to Have not. You may now return to spitting and thinking about sex every seven seconds and waht nt.

  27. I'm with Sam - Cyrano de Bergerac makes me bawl - the bit at the end where she recognises his voice and realises it was him... my eyes are welling up just thinking of it... and Casablanca, who could leave out Casablanca?

In first place has to be Love Story, have loved it since I was knee high, and also Sliding Doors, though that can't really be categorised into chick flick, I still love it!
