A question about slugs.

Okay, this is going to sound slightly ridiculous but I have a question about slugs.
I have a very large-for the city- back garden, and mostly it is filled with a raggedy lawn, mature bushes and hedges, a huge black berry bush, and very few actual flowers. Until we have more money at our disposal that is the way it shall remain too.
Because I don't have a lot of flowers, except for some troughs filled with pretty hardy Geraniums, I don't really get into a flap about snails and slugs. I don't like killing them, I just don't. I usually move all the visible snails off the lawn before I mow it and there was a slug that looked like a small walrus sitting by the kitchen drainpipe yesterday that I moved onto the lawn with a stick.
(I know this sounds more daft as I go on, bear with me.)
However, the last few nights I've noticed something odd. I put the cats out into the garage every night and I feed them there. Apart from the Marklar, the Bigger of the cats and Puddy have their bowls on the floor (concrete) But all this week I have been finding two pretty hardy looking slugbuts in their bowls before I feed them. Normally I toss these chaps out, rinse the bowls then feed the cats, but lo, they are back again the next night.
So, pondering this, last night instead of tossing them out I plonked the very smallest piece of cat food (cod in jelly) down for them (the slugs) and went to bed (upstairs).
This morning it is gone and from all the silver trails it seems they went for it like crack starved junkies. Now maybe they're just coming in because the weather is getting colder, but it does seem they make their little sluggy way in at the same time every evening, and they do seem to make their slugbutty way to the same spot. So what do we think?
Is this odd? Do slugs like cat food?
Or am I spending a bit too much time thinking about slugs?

When the French are preparing snails for the table, they feed them flour and cereal in a bucket to cleanse their digestive tracts. Perhaps your slugs like the cereal in the cat food. Sounds like you need to get a special slug bowl to take care of your two new pets -(Plug and Glug?)Har! You might even train them to eat from your hand!

  2. The black ones are carnivorous and the green ones are vegetarian or it might be the other way round. Whichever way it is the ones coming to the cat food are the meat eating sort...hence the love of cat food or is it the dried sort. I guess I didn't pay attention to that bit of the post. Why do I know this... who knows. It's amazing the rubbish that I store in my head.

  3. Plug and Glug? You're dottier and I am, I wasn't going to NAME them, just feed and coo at them, maybe make them little outfits. (Although Queen Slugforabutt from Earthworm Jim was did run through my head)

  9. I think you're right - they are coming in from the cold. I have snali trails on the mat in the backporch which is often open. If you want to stop them getting in bowls or tubs slaver vaseline round the edges liberally. Great fun!

  10. I don't really mind them, they don't skeeve me out or anything, I was just wondering about their sudden interest in cat food.

I will never be able to eat escargot again after we lived in Oregon and had slugs all over the backyard leaving their slime trail. They had a beauty contest there every year for the "Slug Queen" that was funny and non-sexist actually (dudes often won).

  22. Curses Sam, and they have no ears for earring checking, although in this day and age even that doesn't negate a thing. So how to tell?

My Dad has a big massive veg garden and every night he goes down there at dusk with a torch and does what he calls "Slug Patrol" which means him checking all of the leaves for slugs, picking them off, putting them in a bowl or a bucket or something and then leaving them for his chickens to eat, aw! When I am out visiting I like to watch him do this, he is like a crazed lunatic when it comes to his veggies being eaten by creatures other than humans!

  28. Circle of life I suppose. He has his food, the chickens get theirs.

Yeah slugs eat cat & dog food. They are often in my dog's bowl. Some are carnivorous & hunt snails, other slugs & worms. I recently read of a "kleptoparasytic" relationship between a british species of carnivorous plant & a slug that lives off the dead insects it catches. As a general rule, the ridged slugs with a remnant shell that looks like a little cap, are more often carnivorous. The smoother types eat your garden.
