What a weekend, out of hospital for a Nelson Mandela birthday concert, then to Glastonbury, attacks a fan and back to hospital. It's the wacky work of everyone's favourite crackhead, Amy Winehouse.
Seriously, I don't get the appeal of Winehouse at all. She cannot sing live to save her life. It was actually pitiful to watch her on stage as she bends and jerks her paper thin limbs about, hoikes her skirt to her fanny, warbles off key and out of tune and out of synch with her back up singers, and yet everyone still waffles on about her as though she's the second coming of Mamma Cass/Janis Joplin.
Weird. Yet I can't stop rubbernecking this train wreck. Dear marmalade, I truly can't.
I think she is / was very talented, but the real public attraction to her is more of a morbid curiousity - like watching a spider circling a plughole - you watch entranced until it disappears...

She has emphysema - basically the lung tissue degenerating - it's hardly good for your singing. If I was treating her I wouldn't let her out of the hospital, and if she / her manager / her record company insisted then I'd have them triple sign disclaimers and not let her back in.

I think she has a nice voice, original, her personal life is just a tragedy, she is so young as well, you’d think her parents would try get a handle on the situation. If it were my daughter I’d stalk her until she got herself together. Hopefully she get sorted out and put her antics behind her.

ReplyDeleteHaven't a clue, I always associated it with elderly smokers. ALthough I seem to remember something about the model Christy Turlington getting it too-from chain smoking I think. I suppose if you don't eat and have a weakened immune system you leave yourself open to strange and unusual ailments.

ReplyDeleteIn the recent interview she gave to Rolling Stone, she doesn't think her lifestyle/drug use is a problem. Since her family couldn't give a shit, she'll most likely be dead soon.
Too much, too young. No support - although to be fair to her family she does seem like a pretty willful woman and she is over 18 so presumably their influence depends on how much she's willing to let them have.

I'm not a fan of sectioning but under her precarious circumstances, with no support and every possible enticement available back to drugs and smoking despite emphysema, i think it could well save her life.
Plus she needs a press-free year. That lot can be almost second-degree murderous themselves.
You can't go sectioning people who are not a threat to society, the girl is killing herself. By all means help the lady but ye can't go messing with free will man.

Nonny, I agree, and it's a thorny issue to be sure. I think sectioning should be used only very, very, very cautiously. I wouldn't, however, limit it to just those people with dependents. All that says is that your life isn't worth saving unless you are a parent or guardian.
ReplyDeleteIn this case I would say an addict has, by definition, very little free will. Is she to blame for getting addicted - she certainly is responsible for setting off down that road. This isn't regular addiction though, it's a car smash being played out in front of millions. If the press cared for human life more than money, they would cease writing about her until she got a purchase back on her life. To have to scrabble around for a grip on things in front of the media must only make things worse for somebody as troubled as she is.
It would be good to see her get the help she needs because she is clearly unable to help herself. She isn't herself.

ReplyDeleteI do think addicts with kids should be sectioned or thrown is buning vat of oil purely because they have the potential to ruin innocent lives. In saying that I am not a fan of sectioning people unless it is REALLY nessecary plus there is little point in sectioning an addict unless they actually want help. And no I don't sympathise with drug addictions from weed to crack they sicken me. Why should law abiding tax payers suffer the ills they create. Gas them I say. GAS THEM.

ReplyDeleteHer dad actually went to their local mental health authority to try and get her sectioned about a year ago. He told the press about it because that was the only way she would listen to him.
ReplyDeleteThe NHS refused, on the basis that unless she's in immediate danger of dropping dead, or acutely vulnerable due to not knowing which way is up, she can't be sectioned.
The rules over here about when you can and can't section someone are pretty strict and well defined.
It used to be a bit more, er, lax in the Emerald Isle. I think the 1947 Mental Treatment Act (aka "the green form") has been consigned to the dustbin of history these days.
Unfortunately the world is full of Amy Winehouses, most of them have no money and no publicity either...
I do feel sorry for the woman though. No-one deserves to die of an old man's disease at 24. And for her parents.
