Wrinkles or Cancer, is that the choice?

God damn it, there's always something. Observe from the UK Indo...

"Moisturisers used by millions every day may be increasing the risk of common skin cancers, scientists have warned.

Most such creams have never been tested for their cancer-causing effect on the skin. Now scientists have found that they increase the carcinogenic effect of sunlight in mice.

The skin cancers involved are common in humans. Although mostly non-fatal and easily removed, deaths do occur, especially from squamous cell cancers. These are distinct from melanoma, the less common form of skin cancer, which causes over 1,000 deaths a year in the UK but was not the subject of the research.

Experiments on mice had shown that when caffeine was given orally or applied direct to the skin, it appeared to inhibit cancer. Scientists at Rutgers University, New Jersey, planned to test caffeine as a cancer preventive in humans by adding it to a common moisturiser, Dermabase. Before starting the study they decided to test Dermabase's carcinogenic activity.

To their surprise, they found that it increased the production of tumours in mice that had previously been exposed to ultraviolet light. They then tested three other common moisturisers, all of which increased the production of tumours by an average of 69 per cent.

The significance of the findings for humans has still to be established, the team reports in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology."

When I was over running in Balmoral I attended an interesting lecture with a lady who really made me sit up an take notice and be aware of some of the products we might use on a daily basis. I was surprised to find that Flora or indeed any kind of 'spread' was so much more bad for you than just plain old butter. I learned the ingredients of soaps and shampoos and deodorants, which to try and avoid, which were safe to use. But it's hard to be pure in our habits, hard to avoid heavily advertised products. Scientific studies such as this one serve to remind us that what we choose to use might have consequences. Certainly studies like this make my shoulders slump.
So moisturisers bad, coffee good? Will another report come out in a few weeks time suggesting coffee is bad again? That not using moisturisers containing SPF is bad for you?
Sigh. Doesn't everything seem to be so muddled today?

So much information and so much of it conflicting and changing.

Saw a clip on tv last night about how some monkeys use spears to catch fish.

    muddle muddle muddle.

Blend one cold espresso with a quarter pound of butter. Apply. Notice instant tanning effect.

  3. I think what you should take from that is that we can commission any survey to prove any theory that we so desire to prove.

I also reckon that we've just evolved too much, we just know too much. If we lived by research results I think we'd all be living in wardrobes, popping out for three hours a day of sunlight and some brussel sprouts fresh from the garden.

And then we'd all die of boredom, not cancer.

And I know which I'd rather die of.

  4. Instant coffee brown.
Don't drink alcohol, bad for your liver, but a glass of red wine a day is good for your heart.
That's interesting about the monkeys, they use straws to take ants up out of ant hills too, and use rocks to break open shells. Clever.

  6. There's a japanese Island Okinawa where folk live into their 100s, and it's mostly down to diet and exercise. They eat about 1,700 calories a day, most of it fresh fruit or fish, and they are very active. I think I'll try stick with that one.
Actually there might be something to it all, I did watch a documentary years ago about lab mice who were fed just above the starvation line and they outlived their higher calorie intaking mice pals by almost one third of their lifespan.
I wonder does it really work that way, restrict calories live longer?

It’s hard to know really one of my friends was telling me that Nivea makes hairs grow on her face. I think all that toning malarkey is a tad excessive but all in all I am for moisturiser. I would hate wrinkles. I am a dedicated follower of Clarins. I don’t think you have to spend a fortune either my aunt always used Astral and doesn’t have a wrinkle to her name. She is 82. I like coffee and beer as well, I will be dead by 30.

What about moisturisers with UV protection in them? They have them in Oz, not sure about Ireland - you'd be mighty peeved if they done the total opposite of what they were supposed to do.

Seems like everything gives you cancer theses days.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Exactly Russell. In fact because Ireland is not that hot or indeed sunny, people neglect sun screen and as a result we've got pretty high rates of skin cancer over here.

  10. In case you're interested; most of my long life I have used moisturisers - for the last few years Clinique's 'Dramatically different' and Super defense' and intend to continue to the death.

New research carried out by fat middle aged fuckers suggests strongly ( 84%) that beer, cigarettes and four large glasses of any blended red wine are good for you and your wrinkles.

Nonny your friend is right. Nivea contains Lanolin which should be avoided for anyone who is prone to facial hair or greasy skin. The best ones are the non oil based ones. Cliniqes Dramatically different is excellent but pricey, the cheaper (better in my opinion)option is Simples's light Hydrating moisturiser. Does exactly what it says on the tin and will save you a fortune. It's only around 6E

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anonymous12:43 pm

No way Cate that is mad I thought she was just a tad gullible. Simple is good I use that and Clarins. Cliniqes burns my face for some mad reason. We will all look fabulous at our wakes.

I've stopped paying attention to all these millions of surveys do to exactly the fact that they change every day. So what's the point?
I try to figure out what works for me. I'm not the healthiest of persons, not the unhealthiest either.
And I'm all for the 'live a little' principle. I would hate to diet or not drink for my entire life with the hope to live a few years extra. I'd rather try to enjoy the life I have, for however many, or few, years that might be. No matter how healthy you are you can still die the next time you leave the house, being run over or whatever...

I'm on a skin experiment now and have not used any facial creams for two weeks. My skin seems to be about the same.

I wouldn't turn to me for comfort but I would say that no-one should take life too seriously.

When it boils down to it, if you wanted you could always quit your job go on the dole and whittle wood for the rest of your life ;)

    All stresses are optional.

I can’t quit my job I want to create world peace and improve the lives of poor children, I want to own a 1979 Porsche 911, work for the UN, gain critical acclaim then retire to a ridiculously big house and whilst the rest of the world perceive me a crazy old spinster I will spend my final days experimenting with LSD, bursting stray footballs belonging to school children, calling the police for noisy neighbours and making cardigans from little girls hair. Eva might be my accomplice.

Guess I’ll just have to moisturise and press on.

My sister sold Mary Kay stuff for a while, let me try out the anti-aging cleanser and moisturizer, and I promptly got a chemical burn. Anti-aging by literally removing the top few layers of one's skin, perhaps?

I tried some other creams for a while and saw no difference, so I'm on to the Cetaphil, cheap and extraordinarily kind to my skin. I very rarely see an advertisement for the brand, which leads me to believe it's probably one of the better products out there.

Oh I knew a woman who swore by chinese pearl powder (google it), I tried it but kept forgetting using it so in the end I don't know if it's any good... or bad..

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous3:55 pm

Pearl Powder eh, emmm maybe I could ground up my old set. I have to buy new ones first but can't on account of my humanitarian reckoning. The fact that the oysters which produced my new pearls might die prevents me.

  30. Eva, I googled the pearl powder and I'm intrigued. Looks like you could get many dodgy brands. Is there one that you would recommend?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous4:28 pm

I'm afraid I can't recommend any.. I was given the pearl powder by a Chinese woman - and the text on the wrapping was all in Chinese so I wouldn't have any idea about brands... sorry. Guess it's a matter of doing some online research...?

  38. i get frustrated with "the latest reports" as well - but because the media grab a snippet of a scientific research article, don't necessarily understand it, blow it up to be bigger than it is, and all of a sudden nobody trusts science.

took a class in "science, objectivity, and values" and discussed how to go about changing that - after a few glasses of wine during class (philosophy courses are now my official favourite) we had tons of great ideas... none of them overly feasible, though. it's a shame, really.

  41. Sorry, Fmc, I saw him on Oprah. His theory is an 'inflamation theory of ageing' - certain foods that cause wrinkles and ageing, sugars especially attach themselves to (I can't remember, inside your skin somehow) and drag it down. It's all science, don't worry, nothing new age about it. The diet's very common sense - lots of antioxidents, berries etc. Women need more protein, so more eggs, white meat, fish. Only good carbs, no white refined. It's a doable healthy diet, I think, but too meaty and fish rich for me - so because of that and the fact that I got it in the Recycling centre, you're welcome to it if you want to send me your address - infantasiablogATgmailDOTcom

I can't promise speedy delivery, but I'll get it to you in the end.

  44. Have you seen that show "10 Year Younger"?
    http://tlc.discovery.com/guides/fashion/10-years-younger/about.html

They take women and put them in a plastic booth and then poll pedestrians to see how old they look. It's brutal.
Then they give her a makeoever to look younger which almost always involves laser treatments or peels to address sun damage, teeth whitening, laser eye thing, then new hair, makeup and clothes.
