Eeek a test.
And I failed it miserably!

There are 6, but I counted 3- twice! Damn you 'of'.
I've seen this before and also failed miserably but I heard the explanation is that we subconsciously don't count the F's in the word "of" in the sentence.
How's the cold FMC? Any better?
Still hacking about Bonnie m'dear, better today than yesterday. Thanks you for asking.
I got ths test from a most excellent book I have been perusing all afternoon called, 'Why Don't Penguins' Feet Freeze? and 114 other questions' from NewScientist. Most interesting, I'm about to crack into The Little Book of Scientific Principles, Theories and things,' by Surendra Verma next.
Really sometimes being a bit sick is not so bad, you get to catch up on some reading.
a most excellent book ... called, 'Why Don't Penguins' Feet Freeze?
there are 2 F's in that title, that i can see at least.
i fffear i will be counting F's all nite now. N's too maybe.
But what did you count when you read the post? Did you catch the 6 straight away?
Six.
Oh. Too late.
Bugger.
Take your lolly and go.
i wouldn't have caught the "of" F's if it hadn't been for the last. that 3rd one jumped out, though it shouldn't have since it was the 2nd instance of "of years" and it makes sense that your eye should just slide by.
OTOH i totally missed this egregious error in a full-page New York Times ad before thanksgiving: "The pilgrims were more then pumpkin pie."
What does it prove?
I do the same thing with children. They all look the same to me and I can't really divide them beyond a "hoarde". What does that prove? Life is complex sometimes.
Oh my... It took me about 7 reads to find the sixth F... golly...
Back to school for me...
Ah Kieran, I think it just proves we don't always take into account the little guy, profound no?
Carolyn, it is tricksy, but according to the book it just means you think like the rest of us, so don't despair!
It's how we pronounce stuff too. Of has a 'v' sound, so in looking for an 'f' we are saying 'ffff' in our minds.
I suppose it is sort of like folk who write 'I should of went there' instead of I should have went there'.
Or something.
I knew it was some kind of trick or challenge, so I was extra careful and counted all 6 the first time. Yes, before I checked the comments.
Yes, I'm quite smug.
Smug and slick.
magnificent publish, very informative. I ponder why the other specialists of this
sector do not understand this. You must proceed
your writing. I'm sure, you've a great readers' base already!
