I'm listening to Newstalk 106 radio and today's topic is 'Moral Duty: Would you intervene if you saw someone getting mugged/attacked or would you carry on your way?
The presenter says she would intervene even though she is 'a small woman' a taxi driver has just been on and he says he would not intervene if it was between two men but possibly if it was between women.
What would you do?

I would, perhaps foolishly, intervene. It's a catholic thing.
I would like to think that I would, but then I've never been in a situation where I've had to make this decision.
I think it depends on where, how, when..?
A friend of mine did intervene in a beating though and had his front teeth kicked out! He's been going to the dentist for years now..

I don't know. I would like to think I would jump in if I saw a guy slap a girl around, but then, I saw a girl turn on another guy for doing just that outside the Pod years ago, one minute he was trying to protect her, next minute he was fending her off.
Hard to say really, I'm a great believer in keeping yourself safe by not being or doing stupid things, but it's human nature to want to protect isn't it? I suppose I would try to judge each situation as it arose. Like, if it was two junkies fighting over a fix, then nope sireebob, or if someone had their purse snatched then no, it is annoying but items can be replaced. But if somebody or persons were beating the crap out of someone who couldn't defend themselves then that would be different wouldn't it? What sort of person just keeps walking?
But a solicitor on the show said 'intervene at your peril' and that makes me wonder about the legal aspect of it too.
Hmmmm...I'd have to size up the opponent, first. If I thought it wouldn't earn me a broken head or facial scarring, maybe. Depends on the situation, the combatants, other witnesses, etc. I'm not jumping in when the aggressor is twice my size and really riled up, though I might try to rally other onlookers or try to find a cop. If I thought I could win? You betcha.
