A Sarah Palin Question.
I've just climbed out of a cab and have spent part of my journey listening to the Tubirdy Radio Show as he discusses this women and her beliefs. I sat and cringed as Obama made a terrible slip up and went slithering off the high ground. Does anyone else find it really frightening that this woman is very likely going to be the next leader of America?
Labels: McCain's a sitting duck.

Petrified!
Although she won't be the actual leader of America, she will be little more than a missed heartbeat or two from the hot seat and the big red button.
She looks strangely like Dr. Melfi from The Soprano's too - not sure if this is an omen or a coincidence though.
Yep. Makes old Missus Thatcher look like a bleeding heart-pinko-liberal-intellectual.
Not really, I mean what does antone really know about Varrack Obama either and some of Michelle Obamas comments have been pretty cringeworthy.
My main issue is his selection of Joe Biden as VP running mate, I mean the Obama camp spent the nomination race beating Hillary Clinton for voting FOR the war on Iraq, then they pick Biden who ALSO voted for the war on Iraq.
I am beginning to think that Obama is a bit of an empty vessil and the selection of Palin has been a masterstroke for the Neo-cons.
Anyway, I rewckon her and Mc Cain will be safer than Bush and Cheney, they certainly cannot be worse.
The Obama campaign seems to have lost momentum from what I can see
At the mo, I love her - it's those schoolmarm specs and the idea of her huntin' shootin' moose! Sort of macho in stilettos. The election should be fun and she will win it for McCain. That old codger is so well preserved he'll live to be a hundred. I don't believe the US presidents and vice presidents make the real decisions anyway, they are just figureheads for all those shady CIA type bods who really run the show.
What was the slip-up?
I don't think McCain is long for this planet, he looks increasingly frail and at times exhausted. That makes her commander in Chief if he falls ill or dies.
I'm not sure Obama's the great hope either, he talks a lot but I am unsure of what his policies are.
But an anti-choice creationist? Yikes.
Sam, he waffled on about pigs and lipstick and it was terrible, confused and unsure.
She is a Pro-life campaigner and is planning a shotgun wedding for her 17-year-old daughter. The fact that she goes hunting is worse as clearly she is big supporter of firearms. Just on those three things alone the propensity for her to reek havoc in such an influential position is enormous. It would plunge humans rights advances back decades. And then there are the accusations of her trying to get her brother in law fired. She is quite the mentaler.
I’m no fan of Obama either, despite her support he sold out on Hilary as VP in favour of a war mongrel. I also think he is full of shit.
Nonny
ps She ran a marathon in 2005 but rather than running that makes me think of the Marathon Petroleum Company and the oil threat to Alaska's environment and wildlife.
I'm with Nonny. This woman is frightening.
Here's what this crackpot is all about:
Evengelical Christian, who believes abortion is wrong EVEN in cases of rape and incest.
Thoroughly believes these are the 'last days' and that there's no need to take care of the environment because Jesus is coming to save the day.
Sued the Bush administration for placing Polar bears on the endangered species list for fear that it would interrupt oil drilling in Alaska. And doesn't believe humans have anything to do with climate change.
Supports that wingnut Pat Buchanan(!). Supports big oil.
Believes creationism should be taught in public schools. Opposes sex education and thinks schools should only teach abstinence (we see where that got her own family, the idiot).
Add to all this, this jesus-worshiping, god-bothering, environment-wreckin', gun-totin', piece of shit has no foreign policy experience, making her a very hypocritical choice for McCain, who's been spouting off about Obama's lack of experience in his ads.
To have this woman one heart attack away from that kind of power would be the worst thing that ever happened to the planet, let alone my country. Anyone who supports her is an idiot.
FMC, he didn't call HER a pig in lipstick - he was talking about John McCain. Did Tubridy say he did?
FYI, "putting lipstick on a pig" is a common turn of phrase, probably way more common in the south where I grew up than where Obama grew up, but anyway. It's especially useful for expressing your dismay in a situation where you've allowed students to re-write their papers, and someone hands their original train wreck of a paper back in with only minor changes.
The quotes:
"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."
"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."
"We've had enough of the same old thing."
It's an unfortunate coincidence that she's been using the hockey-mom-pit-bull-lipstick joke on every stump speech, and he pulls out a figure of speech that McCain himself used more indelicately to describe Hillary Clinton's health plan. I'd say this pro-feminist husband of a feminist is highly unlikely, at the very least, to have meant to call Palin a pig.
And in any case, this little frenzy has fuck all to do with anything that's important in this election.
Here's the link. He's definitely, definitely talking about John McCain.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPd4yk0x-eg
Grimsa, you're right McCain used the phrase in relation to Clinton - and also to Mitt Romney.
That said, it was bad judgement on Obama's part simply because he should know that such phrases can so easily be taken out of context. I can see the temptation of wanting to subvert the famous 'pitbull/lipstick' joke by linking it to the 'pig/lipstick' phrase. But he should have done it better than this.
What Andraste said!
Terrifying thought. And you know, I didn't mind McCain so much. He knows war and hates it. However, when they say 'Maverick" in relation to McCain, this means that the GOP 'faithful' don't like him. He had no choice. I cannot imagine Palin is really a like-minded politician, but she is necessary for getting elected. Same with Biden for Obama. It's just politics.
However, of the four candidates for these two jobs, Palin is the most frightening.
horrendous that every one of the american candidates is a jesus freak.
And Ahmadinejad in Iran believes in glowing holy wells and shit like that.
In November, the country was startled by a video showing Mr Ahmadinejad telling a cleric that he had felt the hand of God entrancing world leaders as he delivered a speech to the UN General Assembly last September.
FMC did you read about the new digital copy of the oldest surviving bible being published online?
No mention of the resurrection of Jesus in it either ;)
James, the whole maverick thing used to be true until about 2002. If he'd beaten Bush in the primaries in 2000, I would've had a really, really hard time choosing between him and Gore.
BUT since then, McCain's pledged himself to the far right, the religious right, and the neocon right, and he's become unrecognizable as the relative moderate (except where reproductive rights are concerned) he used to be. I don't have any faith that he'll suddenly recover his senses upon election and swing back to the center-right. Which, by the way, used to be the far right--things have swung that much in a relatively short period.
I also don't have any faith that he makes any connection between his experience as a POW and current foreign policy. The man knows how terrible war is and wants to rush in to defend Georgia against Russia anyway? The man knows how terrible war is and wants to strike Iran anyway? Hogwash.
Merikans, it’s like the Dr. said above. And please don’t be getting all offended when I say to you, that a dog with a mallet up his hole can see that, at the very least, Obama is the best worst candidate. Personally, I’m there with him. I’m okay with his relative inexperience, God knows there will be enough staffers around to help him muddle his way along as President.
But here’s a very thing Merikans.
You will have friends again with Obama.
You will not be fighting pointless wars and your soldiers will not be getting killed needlessly with Obama.
You will come to understand the carbon thing with Obama.
And 95% of you will have your taxes reduced.
Your economy will not be disempowered, Obama is no communist.
All these recent sound bites are just so much flotsam and jetsam.
Listen to the guy, his political pedigree is impeccable, he makes sense.
Merikans, you have a chance now. Don’t fuck it up please. For the rest us, non-Merikans.
Thanks FMC for the space.
McCains attitude to women’s right to choose abortion and indeed his stance on sex education is far too stupid for words. I mean when a future leader of the apparent free world chooses not to educate teenagers about protecting themselves from Aids and other STD’s what hope does the future hold? I would hate to be voting in this election, but I certainly wouldn’t vote for that spanner.
Nonny
It only stands to reason that the first woman elected to the office would be a lap cat of the patriarchy. They sure as hell wouldn't let a feminist run the country.
"You will not be fighting pointless wars and your soldiers will not be getting killed needlessly with Obama."
I think Obama is the best of a bad bunch but this will not happen. Iraq will drag on for years. I think he is full of shit. He will honour one or two of his promises but that will be it.

Like it or not, Sarah Palin represents a sizeable chunk of the American public, who like their guns and their shootin and their big cars etc.
Personally I like McCain, he seems to be clued in, unlike Bush. But of course it matters not a whit, as it is the shadowy Neo-con figures who stand behind Bush Snr and Jnr and that epitome of evil, Donald Rumsfeld. The big corporations , the CIA etc all stand behind these neo cons.
On the otherhand, I think Obama is full of wind and empty rethoric and tries despately to sound like a "coffee coloured" version of Martin Luther King.
Biden is a terrible candidate for Vice President and is a definite weakness, I think that he has made a BIG mistake in not going for Clinton and this will cost him the election.
Remember that the USA elcted GW Bush TWICE, does anyone seriously think they will elect Obama!!!??
Also,
I think Sarah Palin is full of shit, same as Obama, it constantly amazes me that Americans fall for this "razamatazz" soundbites and catch phrases at the podium, for fuck sake, does anyone EVER discuss the issues and what they will do about them??
McCain picked well in that Palin has galvanised the far right which, until her nomination, was not too warm and fuzzy about McCain's pro-choice leanings. That by doing so he showed a willingness to sell-out his beliefs in the pursuit of the office that deeply concerns me.
But no one is talking about that... oh yes... Palin was a brilliant pick in that it's taken all the focus off McCain and Bush (where was Bush during the convention?) and the shambles they've made of the economy and this endless war.
Palin, from what I've learned about her, is very very frightening to me. Frightening because she is so attractive and personable on the surface, but that covers up some pretty extreme beliefs.
Frightening because far too many people will vote for her based on those surface attributes and any attempt to confront Palin on the issues will be decried by the far right as "picking on a woman". Very very clever indeed to find a pretty package to cover up ugly truths and then cry sexism when critiqued.
A woman at work told me yesterday she is voting for Palin (notice she didn't say McCain) because Palin can hunt and looks like Dr. Melfi!!! Like that has f**k all to do with the issues at hand!! But far, far too many people will base their vote on shite like that.
Sometimes I despair for my country, I really do!
I am ascared too Penelope, I am going there shortly. I hope Younorkians aren't McCain fans.

Fatmammycat is it possible to contact you? Thanks
Sure fatmammycat at gmail dot com.
I think a lot of republican folk were unimpressed with McCain, but Palin is aggressive and savvy and what the religious right like. Bearing in mind her stances, she's bound to win over huge numbers of the electorate. Certainly it was a smart move on McCain's behalf.
I've gotta get back to work, but I couldn't leave without correcting Penelope.
Make no mistake, McCain has never been anything but anti-choice. From NARAL:
* Voted anti-choice 125 out of 130 times in his congressional career.
* Consistently voted to restrict access to abortion care.
* Voted against measures to prevent unintended pregnancy.
* Voted for the global gag rule, which prohibits federally funded family-planning clinics from giving women full information about their reproductive-health options.
* Voted for and co-sponsored the Federal Abortion Ban.
* Voted in favor of anti-choice Supreme Court Justices like Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas and Chief Justices like John Roberts.
Most importantly, he has pledged to appoint more batshit conservative anti-choice Justices like Alito, Scalia, and Thomas in order to, among other things, overturn Roe v. Wade.
Aaaaaaannnndd now I'm going back to work.
Sarah Palin represents and will appeal to small town America - Garrison Kieler (sp) land. They can relate to her (even if the reality is that she is an uber sophisticated savvy woman). Her family problems will also appeal to the average citizen as they will probably have similar cock-ups in their own lives. I think she will win it for McCain. I'm suspicious of Obama's love of the stage and celebrity, and his wife. I hated the way US politicians stick their kids up on stage and make them say "I love you Daddy/Mommy etc" - pass the sick bag. Cynical, moi?
"even if the reality is that she is an uber sophisticated savvy woman”
She is in her arse; you are judging her on her appearance. Which I would imagine is what the republicans want you to do. It is part of the propaganda dance. To support a future leader who does not believe in protecting children from life threatening illnesses, who encourages the use of fire arms and fails to recognise a woman’s right to have an abortion, particularly in cases of rape and were the mother may have a terminal illness purely because she dresses well seems quite fucking ludicrous to me.
Obama is full of shit but at least he values free will. I have great faith in our American brothers and sisters. McCain won’t get in.

McCain: Like hope, but different.

"I have great faith in our American brothers and sisters. McCain won’t get in."
I can't tell you how much I hope you're right, Nonny. America is poised to head off on one of two very different tracks. The thing is these McCain tactics are shown to work on people - they're the very tactics Karl Rove used against him in the 2000 Republican primaries, giving Bush the nomination.
I am worried.
I would be too, purity balls, promise rings, Jonas, The Rebulution, Quiverfulls, the religious right have grown steadily more vocal and better organised over the last few years. Though I don't presume to know the ins and out of American politics, that message of god, shame and salvation and us against them is a powerful one. Certainly one a great number of people buy.
Purity balls, ew ew, vomit vomit! FREAKS!!
*Runs screaming round the room*
That's not what being a good father is!!!!
Pant pant pant.
So, I have a vote. Could I vote for McCain/Palin? Er, non. I'm dispirited though, I voted against Bush twice and it didn't seem to work :(
mccain makes me nauseous, and palin makes me vomit. i detest them both. i used to be adamantly on the obama-wagon, but he's done enough two-stepping over the past few months to make me wish i had voted for hillary - you knew what she was about, and that she wouldn't be playing this game.
that being said, we're "f'd in the a" (to borrow a south park term) should mccain and palin be put in charge. i would take obama, gore, either clinton, just about ANYONE over those two - they are worse than GW. and that's the scary part.
there's an old george carlin bit out there about how the american government doesn't want "critical thinkers" to amass significant numbers within the general populace - because there's no way the country would stand for this.
it's sad that we choose our leaders based on what they wear, not what they can do to represent us.
i'm just glad i have a valid passport, because should this thing go mccain, i may be casting about for a new home.
Sarah Palin is an ignoranus*.
*Ignoranus: Somebody who is both stupid and an asshole. ha ha.
I'm with Sam on this: deeply worried. I'm not hearing anyone voice what I believe to be true, that Hilary Clinton would not want VP after coming so close.
Palin was a politically shrewd choice, but she is scary because she believes this is only her due and is too self absorbed to see that she is being patronized & used.
The worry stems from the realization that McCain guessed rightly, that a bunch of dim witted, shallow women will say, "See!, McCain picked a woman, Obama didn't".
"but she is scary because she believes this is only her due and is too self absorbed to see that she is being patronized & used."
Seadreams - I think she knows very well the cynical reasons she was chosen and she will play her part in the deal like an Oscar winning actress. and
"The worry stems from the realization that McCain guessed rightly, that a bunch of dim witted, shallow women will say, "See!, McCain picked a woman, Obama didn't".
Seadreams - you hit the nail on the head here, but perhaps not in the way you meant - I think Obama pitched his stuff to the very vocal (minority) liberal left and the "bunch of dim witted shallow women" (and men) that make up middle America and the majority of voters may feel patronised and that their views may be a bit parochial for him. Rather like the majority of ordinary voters in this country, they are conservative at heart and are perhaps tired of being patronised as a "bunch of dim witted shallow" and will vote for the "war hero"
Joe Biden was a terrible selection as running mate and will lose the election for Obama, conversely Palin will win the election for McCain.
The Democrats have shot theirselves in the foot on this one.
Obama is doing a pretty good job of losing it for himself at the moment. Joe Biden is currently blameless in the gaffe area. When the going gets tough a persons true mettle shows, and Obama is falling apart. Relate that to life or death world situation and we'd all be fucked. I'd prefer to put my money on Hilary in that scenario.
i think that bill maher summed up the whole thing quite perfectly:
http://dncworldwide.com/2008/09/09/bill-maher-obama-is-smarter-than-you/
the fact of the matter is, politics runs on impressions and performances. add to that the fact that the american "public" tends to vote with a short-term memory, not long-term planning. it's not what's going on now, but what happens the week before the election that will influence who gets elected.
i agree - biden was not the best choice image-wise. hillary was a catch-22, and in the end i think it will be better for her not to be VP and later run on her own. obama could have beaten mccain to the punch and chosen a female VP, but instead he chose to counter the main argument against his candidacy - lack of experience. well, biden has that - 37 years or so of experience. obama made an intelligent choice, which lacked glamour and media sensationalism, which may cost his campaign.
then again, we live in a country where the president for the last 8 years was never even elected - so who knows what will happen this year. the actual voting process seems to be more of a show rather than a deciding factor, which i think is just as distressing as the thought of a right-wing, teach creationism in schools, destroy women's bodily sovreignty, teach nothing but abstinence, put a bounty on endangered species, pro-big oil, pro-deforestation, alleluiah jeebus will save us all! palin being next in line should mccain croak in office.
To win, they need to get Obama to step down (family reasons etc. etc) and replace him with Hilary. She'd walk it. The relief vote would be huge.
The woman is completely mental. And they are going to vote her in. We're all fucked
Can I simply just say what a relief to find somebody who actually understands what they're talking about over the internet. You certainly realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More people must check this out and understand this side of the story.
