Anthony Campbell, a life robbed.

Anthony Campbell was a young man. He was 20 years old, a happy go lucky, mad about football young lad. He worked as an apprentice pumber.
Anthony was working downstairs in the house at Scribblestown Park, Finglas, around 9.30am when he was killed yesterday. He was out working, learning a trade, trying to make a few bob for christmas when he was shot dead. He was working in the house of gang boss Martin 'Marlo' Hyland when a gunman burst in into the house and shot him in the head. The hitman then dashed upstairs and shot Hyland at least four times with an automatic pistol in the head and back as the drug baron lay asleep in bed.
Close associates of Hyland (39) are thought to have been behind the crime boss's murder as they feared he was about to turn tout.

I'm not particularly bothered one way or another about Martin Hyland's death. I mean, I think it's awful and I feel sorry for his family, but he was a drug dealer and thought to be behind any number of killings himself. He was-to use a tired cliché- living by the sword.
But I am horrified that this young man was so brutally murdered, that no mercy was shown. That no compassion or even a shred of human decency entered the heart of the killer who killed Anthony Campbell. This is a whole new low for the 'gangland' crowd.
What kind of bastard does something like that?
I was just listening to a member of his family on the Orla Barry show and the shock and grief and disbelief is almost unbearable. I cannot imagine what they are going through, I can't imagine how they are going to make any sense of this callous act.
But something has to give.
When the journalist Veronica Guerin died the outrage and fury of the ordinary people on the street caused huge ripples in the criminal underworld. The pressure began to mount and the media were relentless. Garda muscle was finally flexed and the CAB formed to hit the murdering scumbags where it hurt them most, their finances.
This needs to happpen again.
There should be no shrugging and wringing of hands, there should be no apathy. There should be intense investigations, there should be pressure put on the gangs until someone shakes out a name. I don't believe that this gunman worked alone and I know that someone knows who he was and who hired him.
Anthony Campbell was a law abiding hard working young man, he deserves justice, his family deserve justice. I'm sickened for them today, I can't even remember the last time I felt this offended by my own kind.
Poor Anthony, R.I.P.

That's assuming the young fella knew whose house it was and even if he did he was just an apprentice and had to go where he was told.

Why don't the cunts going around doing hits wear some kind of a mask so there's no chance of them being identified therefore they don't have to shoot innocent people?

Selfish cunts.

I am appalled. His family and friends must be devastated and heartbroken. I never thought something so cold blooded could happen in the land of saints and scholars - what has happened in kind, good natured Ireland - are the use of guns a result of the old "troubles"?

It's horrific. Poor guy. No Shebah, that's the way it's gone now over here, life is cheap.

I think maybe the gun culture has intensified after decommissioning. Alot of these type of attacks were once carried out with the knife but it seems now the knife has been replaced with the gun.

It's a horrible thing to happen. I can't imagine how his family can get through a thing like that. A 20 year old dying is bad enough but under these vicious, unforgivable circumstances the shock must beggar belief.

The full hammer of the law needs to smash down on the gunman, regardless of how it might compromise other police operations, because this is as bald and stark an injustice as you can get and it outrages every fibre of everyone in a way that say gangland money-laundering just doesn't. Justice needs to be heavy, hard and immediate and strike at the heart of the gangs. It needs to supercede all other police gang operations because this is too horrible a crime to wait in line.

Evening Cate, Sam.
It's a curious thing here in Dublin, everyone knows who the crooks are, and yet they seem untouched. Guys and gals who are claiming doles and relief are driving around in 06 reg BMWs and Lexus, it's unreal.
A guy was on the radio earlier, a local Finglas resident, and he says Fnglas is awash with cocaine, everyone's doing it and everyone's turning a blind eye to the suppliers and sellers becasue they know thae cops can't help them. He says-and I believe him-the gangs are laughing at the cops, that they turn up in courts, play the 'poor/bad upbringing/ trying to go straight' song and they're slapped gently on the wrist and released agan, sometimes these guys would have criminal record stretching back well into the Juvenile years. He says why the hell would anyone put their neck on the line to point the finger when the guys can be released on bail within twenty four hours and ringing the doorbell of the witness with the butt of a shot gun two hours later.
Until the courts and the gardai and the whole Irish justice system wakes up and take a cold hard look at the gun and drug culture developing here no one is really going to be brought to book.

Cocaine is THE problem. The money from mostly "respectable" users is funding the guns and gang wars. Hash and heroin aren't half as lucrative. The next time I meet some smug well-got south Dublin cunt who enjoys his coke-fuelled weekends I'm going to do something very "un-cool" to him, publicly.

Oh I'm always meeting coke users, especially at those fucking tedious art things French gay drags me to, very boring. Nothing worse than an artist-normally full of shit- than an artist off his or her box. Talk about self-indulgent waffle.

I am Anthony's aunt in London. I have just told Christine (Anthony's mum) about all your comments and she wants to thank you all from the bottom of her heart for all your kind words. As you can imagine she is absolutely heartbroken (we all are) but to know Anthony was liked and loved so much brings some comfort. She would love to hear from Anthonys friends in Bow, if you would like to email me I will give you her contact details.

Lesley, thank you so much for your email.
I did not know your nephew, but from everything I have read he seemed like a fine young man with a future ahead of him.
I was outraged by his killing. It is too often here in Dublin that violence goes unremarked, and for this occasion I could not let such an abomination go by without expressing what I felt.
My heart goes out to you, your family and to the friends and loved ones of Anthony. I am sure your lives were enriched with knowing him and bereft without.
All my deepest sympathy,
FMC

My name is Esme from London and I am a close friend of Anthony's family. I cannot express enough the sincere sadness and grief we all feel here, on behalf of my family and everyone who knew Anthony. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Christine (his mum) and the rest of his family and friends in Dublin. Anthony's mum came to London when Anthony was a about 2ys old he lived and grew up in the East End of London, which some may say was a very rough area and not too disimilar to Dublin. But as we all know, there are good and bad people all over the world. We cannot change what has happened, and we cannot restrict our children and loved ones to live their lives in order to protect from the dangers of everyday life. BUT That is exactly what Anthony was doing "living his life" when he left London at around 17 years old he had been to school, made friends, played football, supported his favorite team arsenal. Loved music he used to love Michael Jackson and would mimic his songs and dances with great expertise, and not a care in the world. He was part of a community of all ages and races and he touched all our lives, especially his adopted family Mitchell, Vera & Leslie, Lesley & Chris, Stephanie, Natasha and Sonny. We all have our special memories of him that we can share with each other in tears and laughter. Anthony continued to live his life in Dublin he was reunited with the rest of his family, he made new friends and became part of another close community. He was just like any other young man going to work to earn a living, trying to carve out a career for himself and his future. Until that day, the day we can never forget, the day we are all trying to learn to live with.....when someone took his life.... you know who you are, and one day we will all know who you are and YOU will get what you deserve YOU will be punished.
