I'm a bouncy, opinionated, messy haired marathon running (!) bibliophile. I wear high heels and have delightful ankles. I'm a devoted drinker. I want a French Bulldog puppy whom I shall call Batman and dress in capes on occasion. I would also like a pug, whom I shall name Mister Woo. He can remain capeless, but I will make sure he wears a diamante collar at all times. Both dogs will submit to repeated snorgling and high pitched squeals that only a dolphin would normally tolerate. I hate Reiki/psychics/mystics/frauds with all my liver. Also, I'm firmly against Jazz and poetry/poems/pomes/ peoms or any of that stuff. I believe in the healing power of ginger.

Yes, you are correct - not everybody can claim to walk among the "beautiful people". Cowan (and Bertie before him) certainly can't. I can't either (although I'm beautiful on the inside).
They are entitled to wear make up if they want - I don't think anybody would begrudge them that.
What they would begrudge however, is spending thousands of euro (of tax payers money) on cosmetics and make up artists in some kind of combined PR/Vanity project. Enough money to employ a nurse, a teacher or a guard maybe? Enough money to provide ABA teaching for an autistic child?
Let him buy his own fucking Max Factor and apply it in front of his own bathroom mirror each morning, by himself, like the rest of the make up wearing general public do.
If you're a tax payer then you'll know I was talking about Bertie's make-up bill, and if you could READ you'd see the post was in relation to something Brenda Power said on her radio show earlier today.

I couldn't care less what any politician looks like, unless they are so image conscious that they get 'work' done or expend public monies on their appearance. I'd suspect a raging ego and that doesn't tend to coincide with a public service ethic.
Even if they looked like an anonymous troll I wouldn't mind. I might even vote for them if their policies were sound. The least question about Cowen is his appearance.

FMC - I would go into your blog settings/comments and change it so that only bloggers can comment. It won't stop idiots with an axe to grind from commenting and trying to rile you up, but at least they wouldn't be able to do it anonymously.

The post is a joke with Conan, over something a radio presenter said, but SOMEHOW that suddenly becomes about women's looks and me being shallow and our brave keyboard warrior being 'disappointed' even though they've completely missed the entire point and haven't even been 'big enough' to admit that.

Er... With great respect and all that the thing about make up is a bit silly. If you take a picture of yourself under very bright lights with a decent camera, over 6M pixels, and modern TV cameras are about five times over that power then the average middle aged punter or politician looks like shite. Or even a twenty something on Saturday morning. Last nights pints show like beacons and the crap circulation and .. no you do not want to think about it. Fit, really healthy people on the peak of their form maybe and I repeat maybe do not have this problem. For news and current affirs you just bosh the light in. There isn't a choice, sculpting and all the rest go out the window. Time is everything.
So make up is needed if you do not want to be looking like a complete and rather unnatural refuggee from Shrek.
Any way makeup artites are in general nice people and need a few bob.
