Cyclists Beware.

Every so often Finn or Gimmie or John or somebody will relate a bicycle story that oozes road rage or idiocy and I'll read it and laugh, because they write real funny like, but part of me will offer up a small witter to marmalade to keep the bloody amusing buggers safe as they peddle thither and yon.
This is why...

One dead, ten injured, all because some dickwad was drunk and fell asleep behind the wheel in mexico. The were only 15 minutes into a 34k road race. They hadn't a chance.
So keep safe cyclists, keep your eyes peeled and your ear open and don't bother getting into one with fuckers who think they own the road. You know they don't and they have small willies.

That is absolutely horrifying. I do my little 5-mile round trip, mostly through a quiet neighborhood, a couple times a week, and still worry about getting lost in thought and turning in front of a car, or worse, a driver simply not seeing me. I never stopped to worry about a drunk driver in daylight hours.

My God that is awful. They should address safety issues for bikeateers here though, you see more and more bikies on the road each week. I'd like to cycle but can't.

I have to say there are decent enough bike paths and lanes up around my way, but even then I have to admit to being a bit nervous about cycling anywhere.

That's a sickening photo. But there's no legislating for that kind of scumbag idiocy.

Group cycles, be they races or training rides are quite the target of late. Incident in Australia recently.

But if you're out riding solo the secret is to be seen and to take up too much road. If you're close to the curb drivers, will overtake dangerously. If you're right out there, they'll wait. They might hate you, but they'll wait.

And the more people who cycle, the safer it becomes.

I saw this earlier today and shivered - I cycle to work every day now and this very morning a lunatic car driver nearly knocked me over - he was driving way too fast and was just not paying attention.
Luckily most of my journey to work is along a cycle path by a canal, but even so apparently the few quiet streets I have to cross before that aren't safe enough.
And this picture is an especially horrific example on how drugs and driving don't mix!

I suppose there's little you can do except be careful, but as Gimmie's story proves, if a dick head wants to cause maximum damage and injury it's very bloody easy for him to do so.

3 people have already emailed me the link to this this am. It gives me the shivers. Gimme is right, take up the road, be seen - but don't be a dick. There are plenty of idiot bikers also. A world class female biker and a local team rider for the bike shop right by my house were killed here a few weeks back. A police deputy crossed the center line coming around a corner going downhill as they were riding up. It appears he had worked 2 shifts and was exhausted and lost concentration.

I drive down the canal to work, there is an excellent cycle lane, I'd imagine lanes like this would help secure a safe passage for bikies. The number of people who use it in the morning certainly appriciate it. You'd think they'd make more. Did the guy in Mexico do it on purpose?

That's a horror of a picture. God, to see these people being flung to their deaths just like rag-dolls because of one drunken fuck-head. Bloody senseless.

Images like this ought to be shown to every driver before they get their licenses.

I saw that today and my stomach flipped over. This is what I fear everytime he goes out on his bike.
Awful.

Women are safer to ride than bikes, provided you take the usual precautions, and the exercise is just as good.

Npt very good if you're seeking calf development though, Anonymous. I suggest an ovine for that. or a recumbent fawn.

God I;m horrible for that, Don't disagree it'll pnly make it worse.

Horrenduous. Gimme and JohnMc are 100% right, as I know too well from my cycling days in Dublin. Take up the space of a car (they mostly have one person in them so what gives them claim on more space?) so the traffic has to properly overtake around you.

Mind you, in plenty of places you'd be going lots faster than the rush hour traffic, even up the hill at Milltown. Ouch!

Depends on the woman I would have thought.

Everyone needs to slow down a fraction on our roads, I don't know WHY everyone feels it's so important to be first at the lights or first in a queue of traffic. You'll get there eventually, leave earlier if you're that worried about it.
