The great fur debate....

rumbles on. Follw this conversation if you will.
...'she just sat there like a fool.'
'Oh Christ-'
'Who?'
'Beyonce Knowles, she's an idiot. The PETA crowd totally got her.'
'What was she supposed to do? She's a singer and she thought they had won a dinner with her. Okay she uses fur in her collection and maybe she needs to be able to defend her choice in-'
'OH my God, defend! Don't start. Fur is totally wrong in this day and age. It's cruel, there is no excuse for it.'
'Ooof, mon dieu, I'm going to ze bar.'
'Lots of things are cruel. You eat meat don't you? You think all the animals you eat died of old age? You wear leather and suede, think the cows shed that like snake skin?'
'Have you ever watched any of the videos?'
'I have, and I've also witnessed animals dying in a slaughter house, don't forget I grew up on a farm. Do you think being hauled into a crush and having a bolt put through your head is a fun way to go?'
'That's different.'
'Is it really? Not for the cow I'm sure. Perhaps you'd better educate yourself a bit more to the practices of slaughter houses before you go on a rant about the fur industry. Trust me, next time you eat a bacon sambo, think of the pig. I bet he wasn't happy about dying. Are those shoes leather?'
'Leather is a by product of the meat industry. There's actually no need to wear fur.'
'There's actually no need to wear leather or eat meat either. There are plenty of other options.'
'But you wear leather too!'
'Yes, but I don't bleat on about fur being cruel, frankly I think cows are a whole lot nicer that minks.'
'Hi Honey, what are you two talking about.'
'Fur.'
'Fur.'
'Hum, I"m going to the bar, ladies, anybody want a drink?'
'I'll have a gin and tonic.'
'You?'
'No thank you. Look I'm not saying that meat is completely right either.'
'Right, but it's easier to pick on a person wearing fur than a person eating a Big Mac, it's reverse snobbery. Everyone can afford a Big Mac, ergo it's okay, not everyone can afford a fur coat, ergo it's cruel and they deserve our scorn.'
'For -you have cats! Imagine someone skinned them.'
'I'd be very upset, I like the cats, especially the big one.'
'Well then!'
'Well then what? You know PETA don't appprove of people having pets either.'
'What?'
'PETA, they don't agree with companion animals, for god's sake, if your going to sing their praises for hounding Beyonce Knowles you should at least know something about their so called 'ethics.' They have a kill policy, they don't re-home. What's her name, Newkirk, the boss in the states, she against companion animals, pets to you and me. She'd put my cats down in a heart beat.'
'Oh, I'm not sure I believe that.'
'Look it up.'
'I wlll.'
'Good.'
'I still think fur is cruel.'
'Nobody is saying it isn't. But unless you are a vegan, you don't have a high horse to hurl abuse from.'
'I don't know why I talk to you.'
'Me neither.'

I have a moleskin weskit. A beautiful example of the furrier's art. He was telling me that the moles have to be de-skinned alive to preserve the lustre. It's as warm as toast in the winter.

FMC, am you the smartest person you hang around with? It sounds like it.

Speaking as one who am furred, me would like to say that fur am NOT cruel and fur am NOT murder. Cruel am deliberately causing pain and suffering and murder am premeditated killing of a human being. Premeditated killing of animal am, as you said, slaughter. Me have know several furriers who live on everything from mink farms to chinchilla and me have to tell you that those that believe in, as Dr. Marron said, live skinning always gas animals first, probably to avoid all that kicking and screaming and biting and stuff. The animals simply go to sleep and never wake up. No pain and suffering at all! Now ones me know who skin dead animals, they also gas or poison the little darlings. Again, no pain and suffering and some get a really good sweet last meal. As far as byproducts go, last time me talked to me friends bout this, they was making more money on selling meat to dog/cat food plants and farm feed stores and skins was considered the byproduct. Also, chinchilla am suitable for human consumption much like rabbit. mmmMMMMmmmhasenfeffer!

Hilarious conversation.

I am not a fan of fur, but it's not because of cruelty or a misplaced sense of vegetarian righteousness...I do wear leather shoes and belts and if someone wanted to buy me a nice leather biker jacket, I wouldn't say no.

(My main reasons for not eating meat are because of factory farming and the hormones, chemicals, etc., in the feed, and not wanting that stuff in my system, not cruelty. Cruelty is everywhere and until people can fucking treat EACH OTHER better...ugh, that's another debate)

I just think fur is UGLY. I'm against it because it's just really, really ugly, it looks...oh, so poncy, and is a gratuitous display of wealth.

Don't like fancy cars or bling much, either.

Heeeeyyyyy...maybe I'm AMISH!

I knew it Andraste! Can you build a really good shed?
No Monstee my fuzzy blue ball of lurve, I"m not that smart, but even I can recognise a specious argument when I see one. I don't mind folk that object to fur, but for a reason- say they don't like it, or the are a vegan and think all animal product is wrong, then I will listen. But not because 'it's cruel'.
Re factory farming, it's supply meets demand, everybody wants cheaper and cheaper goods and the only way to provide it is to farm in this manner. Personally I only free range eggs and chicken above a certain age and corn fed, but I pay extra for it. A lot extra.

Personally I'm a meat-eater and skin-wearer and as willing to not think about where they come from as the next guy.

Greetings, Cat. I've been a regular but silent reader for a couple of months and I really enjoy your Blog.

Thought I'd break my habitual silence and say that Fatmammycat was just mentioned a few minutes ago on RTE1 radio on the "Rattlebag" programme. The theme of the programme is "Internet Creativity". You may be able to get hold of a stream of the programme later on today on the RTE Website.

If mink and ermine were so fucking smart they'd have copped on years ago that they were getting killed for their fur and evolved into having some other kind of covering.

Get the hell out of here! On Rattlebag, ye gods. I feel, well I feel rather light-headed actually, but that could be the rum and coke. Fame! Fame I tells ya.
Oh, my manners, where are they gone? welcome Willie, I'm terrifically glad you uncloaked.

I'm neither pro nor anti - I figure it's up to the individual. I wear leather shoes, belts, bags; same thing, still the skin without the hairy bit.. BUT...if I lived in Northern Scandinavia, Siberia or among the Inuit, then I would probably wear all the furs available. It's never cold enough in London to wear fur, and there are plenty of nice duvet-like jackets which a girl can wear without being spit on.

3:15 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

But that's my point darling, why spit on fur but not on leather? Why do folk get all antsy about one but not say, a sheepskin coat?

It's the rich bitch envy thing, fmc - never mind that the leather bag might be a Birkin and cost 4 grand for a couple of feet of leather! The fur is perceived as an in yer face luxury item ( like the Ferrari).
