Television Licence? Are they fucking joking?

I almost fell out of bed last night when I read how much a TV license costs in this country. €158! To own a television! (you can probably tell It's been a while since I purchased one, but they've been doing the rounds up this way lately)
€158.
God damn it, I'm a relatively law abiding citizen. I pay tax, I pay PRSI. I don't know why this maddens me so...
Actually I do. The reason I'm up in arms about it is my Spanish friend was forced to buy one last week after a louche fuckwit called to her home and demanded she get one. Now I know my señorita, she no more watches the dross offered up on RTE 1/2 TV 3 or 'TG4 or 'Channel 6' than I do. In fact she only watches Living TV and Hallmark. I doubt she's ever changed the channel. But off she went and got one.
Now I am incensed. I'm still not completely recovered from paying the HIGHWAY ROBBERY that is car tax last week, but grudgingly I will put up with it as long as they keep the roads in relatively good nick (although someone needs to explain to me why I pay almost double what a Nisson Micra driver would pay, don't both fucking cars use the same roads and now I see over at Major's some twat in the green party wants to increase even that) But a TV licence, what the hell is that for?
I don't watch Irish channels either, have you seen what passes for entertainment on them? But if push comes to shove I suppose I'll just have to get off my arse and get one. But why? I already pay NTL handsomely for the pleasure of using their services. So this €158? What exactly is it for? I already own the god damned thing, why do I need a license for it at all?
And then there is this...

'Conviction for non-payment of a television licence (first offence) is a fine of 634 euro.

If you are convicted a second time for not paying your television licence, you will be fined 1,269 euro and your television and signal equipment will be confiscated.'

Ahahaha. Now I would like to test this one. How would they get my property, because they sure as fuck would not be coming into my house to get it, and they won't be scaling any walls to take down any cables neither, not it they don't want a golf club to the back of the head they won't. So how would they 'confiscate' my property?
I realise this is but a very minor thing to most folk, but is is and it isn't, it's another bloody con in a country of cons. They-yes they- take our money at every single opportunity and we give in like sheep. The 'government'- yes that shower- change the laws, act arbitrarily, ignore concerns and continue to fleece us, yes fleece us, every single change they get.
I'm bloody sick to the teeth of it.
Thieving, I'm very against it.

Apparently, and I stress apparently, a state is not allowed to charge for a television licence unless they offer a choice of viewing...RTE does not do this. We're given RTE 1, 2, TV3 and TG4 and expected to like it too. If RTE broadcast BBC and other channels as standard then from what I know they would be within the law to charge a television licence.

But as with every money matter, this government just won't entertain debate...I mean the pay ri- er, television licence price is totally justified when you think about it, no?

It is most assuredly not. Although I take your point. I still wonder why we are requirecd to have a licence for owning goods at all.
Speaking of licence queries, what also tickles me is pondering the connection between RTE pulling professor John Crown from the discussing the government/HSE failings on the Pat Kenny show, this is the same RTE whom happen to be up for their own licence renewal in the newt few weeks.

Curiouser and curiouser, as the girl once said. And I do agree with you as well, there's no justification in the price of it!

Exactly! They're trying to follow the BBC model, but the BBC don't have advertising, RTE is chock full of adverts, so why do we have to pay for it as well?

I'm beginning to fully understand those folk that live in cabin in the woods, grow their own food, generate their own electricity and keeps wells for water. Sure I like money and high heels and cocktails and rum, but I'd still crank up the truck once a month to come into town for some socialisation.

Oh to own my own house, on a corner site in a big estate, then I would cut all cabling on my property and ask NTL to pay me instead if they want to route their product using my walls.

The license fee was hitched up to the consumer price index just a few years back... so it now goes up automatically, government's meant to rubber stamp it.

It is a regressive tax - like all our stealth taxes - since it's paid out of after (income) tax income. So, proportionally, poorer people are obliged to spend a greater portion of their disposable income on these taxes.

As a matter of fact the license fee doesn't cover just the tv, it's also radio and a proportion of it now also goes to commercial broadcasters, whether you listen to or watch the programmes or not.

Broadcasting legislation goes back to early days of the state when there was no money for anything and it was decided that it should be publicly funded (license fee) and commercially funded (sponsored programmes and advertising) now about 60%-40% for RTE.

Raphael Burke - the criminal and former FF minister - castrated RTE and they never grew their balls back.

"the criminal and former FF minister "
I was just thinking how naturally and easily that description rolls off the tongue.
I didn't realise it covered radio as well. But we are not obliged to have a licence for owning a radio, so why does it cover this?
I'm not even trying to be facetious, I honestly want to now why we- the people - must continue to pay for an increasingly expensive licence when there are huge sums being make in advertising. And is there a way to object? (apart from my getting arrested form non compliance, which I would consider)

It would convince me to get rid of the tv again.

It's the reception apparatus we require a license for... eh, I'm not sure I should say this but you're fit and your blood pressure should be ok... are you sitting?

Here goes: they're looking at broadening the legal description of the apparatus... so, for instance, broadband+PC+software = TV reception apparatus. Therefore you'll need a license for it, wherever you may be (ie in your car), since a license is location specific, not person specific.

In short you may need a TV license for your car because your laptop is in it.

Once again I'll be the contrarian, but only to make this point. In fairness what passes for entertainment on TV3 is really what we might face if we don't have a national channel. For that reason, I am happy to pay for my RTE.

I would worry that my son would grow up thinking that the only kind of TV was endless re-runs of Frasier, The Simpsons, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and Eastenders.

I know if you hate RTE then you might have a point and the way in which it is charged does present me with a problem because everybody pays equally, rather than it just being put into income/corporate tax and then it would be based on ability to pay.

However, I (please don't hit me) like RTE. There. I've said it. Or written it.

Let me guess, you want me to pay your TV licence as well?

Well. I was going to make the no advertising argument until I read your comment there, fmc. Now I can't think of a single thing to justify that amount of money. Holy pixels, that RTE had better be good.

An English journalist refused to pay his license a few years ago on the grounds that it impeded his right to information. Even if he never watched the BBC, he would be forced to pay a license to have access to other channels. He was supposed to be taking it to the European courts but I don't know what became of him though...

I've never paid a TV license although I consider myself a very law-abiding tax payer. If I were in England I would, but seeing as how RTE run advertisments I never saw why I should subsidise them. Italian TV is too laughable to consider paying money for so I don't pay one here either.

Business + State Run = Very Bad Idea.

Licenses would be fine if RTE had no advertising.

Actually cancel that. Paying Licenses is never good, and is just an excuse for an after tax, tax.

Evening folks,
Medbh, if they even fined one they're thieving bastards.
Conan, that's making me feel very funny, and not ha ha funny neither.
Sam, it should be but it is not.
Docky 2, but why cannot RTE operate with the ENORMOUS revenue it collects form advertising? Why are we paying for a it in an ever increasing licence?
Caro, Jonathan Miller was his name, I used to read of his battle in the times every week. I wonder what ever happened to him?
John Mc, agreed.
I'm seriously curious, if you didn't want to pay it and refused to pay any sort of fine, would a stint in jail be on the cards?

If they were to work the same as TV3, then their programming would look like TV3. No Nationwide, no Questions and Answers, no Prime Time, even children's programming would only be bought-in crap. that is why it is so expensive. The BBC is getting a 191 Euro per licence fee (20% higher than here) from a population of 50 million people, RTE is only getting it from a small number.

What's the alternative? TV3/SKY One as far as I can see.

If you remove the TV licence and let them go fully commercial, then you must allow RTE to change their schedule to the cheapest programming with the biggest audience. Right now, they must provide programmes that might only have a minority audience (Rose of Tralee, anyone?).

If you want them to stop taking advertising money, then you must be prepared to pay a licence fee of hundreds of Euro.

The ad breaks on RTE are way shorter than on TV3. Also, would TV3 ever make Falling for a Dancer? Riverdance? Will TV3 ever put together an orchestra?

This is why I want to continue paying a licence and it is why I think it is good value.

Otherwise, we might as well all go back to book reading or something ;)

7:31 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

Book reading eh? Hard to be against that.
There are loads of alternatives, I like Discovery and Hallmark and Channel 4 and E4 and Living, and I happily pay for watching them. I never watch RTE, unless I happen to stumble across 'reeling in the years' then I'll watch. The occasional political programme notwithstanding, RTE don't offer me bang for my buck and I'm not alone in that, as a group of stations it is shedding numbers every year. RTE 1 and 2 and TV3 have already gone down the route of imports and those imports are probably grossing the higher viewing figures, so do we still need to continue subsidise it with our hard earned cash? Not on your nelly.

hi i dont know which country you live in but i live in UK and the greedy tax is advertised for ownership of a telly, this is FACTUALLY INCORRECT.

its only for the USE of the tv, ie reciving LIVE broadcasts, not for watching DVD, playstation etc

until a few years ago they used to put people in prison for not paying, today they advertise that you could get a £1000 fine but this is just scaremongering as its normally in the region of £200 as no one could pay the licence and the fine at that expensive rate.
